All the Birds

First the Twits

UPDATE: The button quail chick never made it. I didn't have the heart to write it up till now. Poor little mite wasn't getting anything to eat. Turns out I have to provide extra small bits on a large flat surface. There hasn't been another one so I have appropriate stuff now but no baby. On the happy side the old zebra finches got themselves another daughter, so there's 14 birds all together in the kitchen. One canary has his own cage. It's a bit more work for me but the fighting was just too much to take. I let Henry out to fly a lot and he always hangs close to the aviary and puts himself to bed when he's had enough. The older cages are in storage since I built this one. I had to build an extra door in one end but it works pretty good and doesn't look bad. I also need to look into a net for catching birds as sometimes you just have to handle them. So far all fights resolve quickly with one bird retreating behind one of the many screens of toys or foliage so it seems to be working great. The twit thumbnails open links to larger versions.
I'm still hoping to see other baby birds in the twit cage. The other adults all took a protective stance towards the baby zebra finch, which was darling, and most of them have gone through the motions of nesting and at times brooding, but nothing serious yet.
The parrots below the twits are Petey, a senegal I've had long enough to be friends, and Sam, a Timneh I haven't. Sam has bounced from home to home being mismanaged so badly that he's a problem child. We're working on it but you really have to be brave, steadfast, and patient, when dealing with an animal this bright and sensitive. Yes he talks, a lot, and it's very funny.

Two big cages in the kitchen

Nice blue cage huh?

Aren't they pretty?

This is the new aviary made of lumber and a new cockatiel cage dismantled. Nice eh? They're happier and more fun to watch now.

What's that thing?

No, really, what IS it?

You SURE it won't eat me?

Will it steal my soul?

They wanna see me, here's my BACK!

I'm handsome?

Really?

Well I do preen carefully.

Look at me Internet!

This is a great playstand.

I can peek into the kitchen!

Do ya like my orange vest?

It's very good in traffic.

What?

I'm eating corn.

Do you mind?

Pretty good spread huh?

Hey, can I get in on that?

You should see what this dog is doing...

She's big, but she's nice.

Sam Bird

aka Sir Chompsalot

Hi, My name is sam!

I hate black hands and gloves.

I think I see the problem here, ma'am.

Ahhh, scritchies...

Look what the rabbits did to this floor!

I'm handsome, aren't I?

How about on this side?

This is my vulture look.

See my goth cape? Very vamp!

But hey, I'm loveable.

This was day one in the new home, September 2007.

I felt scared and imprisoned again.

But I sure was curious about the new folks.

What?

I like climbing on the bunny stuff.

Where's that wascally wabbit?

Here's me with brother Petey, he's my best friend.
